Dr. Fred Guenther's unique dual role, a physician and Chair of Mecosta County Medical Center's Board of Trustees, provides him with a one-of-a-kind perspective about the importance of upgrading to digital mammography at MCMC. As a practicing physician and President of Obstetrics & Gynecology of Big Rapids, P.C., his professional endeavors have been focused on the health care needs of women in our community since 1983. "As a doctor who cares for only women, digital mammography is vital to their long term health," stated Dr. Guenther. "The improvements that are planned for mammography services at the Medical Center are state-of-the-art. The efficient use of digital mammography will lessen the woman's anxiety with the procedure."

As Chair of MCMC's Board of Trustees* of which he has been a member since 1992, Dr. Guenther consistently has demonstrated his support of MCMC's mission, "advanced care with a personal touch." He is lending his leadership skills to the Digital Mammography Steering Committee and also brings resource development experience from his service on the Michigan Tech Fund Board of Trustees and on the MCMC Foundation Board. "This is the first time MCMC has tried private fund raising for a vital service. It may be that in today's health care environment, this is the way that we have to fund many state-of-the-art projects," commented Dr. Geunther.

The combination of knowledge and skills that Dr. Geunther brings as a physician and a leader provides a valuable perspective to the project. "Because of the vital need for digital mammography, the Board of Trustees agreed with the Foundation Board that this would be an excellent project to begin our road to private fund raising," commented Dr. Guenther. "The unanimous opinion of the Medical Center Board, the Foundation Board, medical staff and hospital employees, is another example of our concern for the health care needs of the citizens of our area and for the long term future of the Medical Center."

*Mecosta County Medical Center is governed by a nine-member Board of Trustees, three of whom may be healthcare providers. Appointed by the Mecosta County Board of Commissioners, trustees serve in a volunteer capacity and must be county residents. The Mecosta County Medical Center Board of Trustees determines hospital policy and provides direction and counsel on management, administration, planning and development.
