Diabetes Support Group at Mecosta County Medical Center
WHEN: The group meets the first Thursday of every month at 3:00PM.
WHERE: In the MCMC Boardroom.
WHO: Individuals affected by diabetes directly, or have a friend, spouse, or family member who is diabetic, who want to be more educated about diabetes through group support and speakers. (Children are welcome but should be accompanied by an adult.)
SPEAKERS: Physicians, nurses, dieticians, medical specialists, FSU clinical experts, and community professionals talk about various topics including dental, eye and body care; nutrition, exercise, new research, medicine, and supplies.
BENEFIT: By attending every month, you can learn how to have a positive influence on your blood glucose and your overall health by choosing foods wisely, exercising regularly, reducing your stress level, and making modest lifestyle changes.

Diabetes Self-Management Education Program at MCMC
WHEN: This 3-part series is offered on a regular basis. Day and evening classes are available.
WHERE: MCMC Classroom.
WHO: Individuals affected by diabetes directly, and have a physician referral.
LEADERS: A multidisciplinary team including a registered dietitian and a registered nurse.
BENEFIT: During the course of the group sessions you will learn more about: the diabetes disease process, treatment options, nutrition management, acute/chronic complications, problem solving, monitoring, utilizing medications, physical activity, and goal setting.

Total prevalence of diabetes in the United States, 2005

Total amount: 20.8 million people–7.0% of the population–have diabetes.
Diagnosed: 14.6 million people
Undiagnosed: 6.2 million people
Age 20 years or older: 20.6 million or 9.6% of all people in this age group have diabetes.
Age 60 years or older: 10.3 million or 20.9% of all people in this age group have diabetes.
Men: 10.9 million, or 10.5% of all women aged 20 years or older have diabetes.
Women: 9.7 million, or 8.8% of all women aged 20 years or older have diabetes.
