| Appointment Schedulers at Mecosta Health Services |
When you call Mecosta Health Services in Big Rapids, your call is answered by the switchboard person (usually Alice Ottobre), and then your call is transferred to the appropriate person.
At the end of March, MHS is improving its customer service by allowing patients to select from a menu of choices on the telephone. The choices will be: Appointment Scheduling, Referrals, Billing, and Prescriptions. Any other calls such as an emergency or immediate need to talk to a nurse will be directed through Alice by pushing "0".
This will cut back about 50% of the approximate 400 calls the front desk answers per day. It will also speed up any wait time that you as a patient, may have endured in the past. Patients will go through our system more quickly and more directly.

Jackie Ward, our RN Supervisor will continue to check messages for prescription refills every half hour (this usually totals about 50 calls per day).
So who are these people who schedule your appointments? They also work with the referral office, help doctors work more efficiently, work with your insurance companies, know medications, and have a medical background. They are from the Appointment Scheduling Department. The group consists of: Marsha, Joni, Pam, Alice, and Shawn.
Their medical backgrounds all range from 3-24 years of patient service.
Marsha is a certified Medical Assistant with experience in Cardiology and general office nursing. She helps the patients of Dr. Wright, Dr. Macdonald, and Tracy Sackett-Foster, PAC.
Joni handles Dr. Howie's referrals and helps patients of Pete Baar, PAC and Laurel Gorham, CPNP, and schedules appointments for routine injections such as allergy, vitamin, and flu shots.
Pam is a certified Medical Assistant and takes calls for Dr.

Foster, Dr. VanderHill, and Andria Keusch. Her experience working in a Cardiology office helps patients who have medical questions.
In their spare time, Marsha enjoys golfing and reading, Pam is kept busy with four children, one grandchild, and attending sporting events. Joni has three children and enjoys sewing. Shawn golfs and has one child, and Alice loves crafts, biking, and snowmobiling. Say hi to these hard-working ladies when you get a chance!
