Celebrate New Medical Center with Ice Cream Social - June 1
Mecosta County General Hospital is holding its annual public Ice Cream Social, and grand opening celebration with tours on Thursday, June 16th from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. This day will also mark the official hospital name change to become "Mecosta County Medical Center". The MCGH Auxiliary sponsors the Ice Cream Social, giving proceeds from pie and ice cream sales to the hospital for medical equipment - raising nearly $500,000 so far since 1964. This year the focus will be directed toward the celebration of MCGH's new Emergency Room, Operating Rooms, Laboratory and Registration areas. The ribbon cutting ceremony begins at 5:00 p.m. in front of the main entrance of the hospital, and the MCGH Auxiliary's Annual Ice Cream Social event will begin at 6:00 p.m. in the Middle Triangle Park. Tours of the new ER, OR, Laboratory and Registration areas are available from 5:30 - 7:00 p.m. In addition to ice cream and home-made pies, the Auxilians will have a dessert-of-the-month drawing, awards for six Health Career high school graduates in the Mecosta County School District, plus three VanDyke Scholarships to those entering medically related fields of study.
Social proceeds go to fund next year's scholarship awards. A concert by the FSU Summer Band directed by Scott Cohen will offer a relaxing environment starting at 7:00 p.m., as you sit and relax with neighbors enjoying our unique hometown surroundings during our Sesquicentennial year in Big Rapids. So come to the Ice Cream Social, eat lots of pie and ice cream, and see how the voters of Mecosta County have allowed many improvements to our community hospital in such a short time. "We hope everyone will take part in this special occasion," notes MCGH CEO Sam Daugherty, "We are proud of the way the entire county as gotten behind this important health services project and we want everyone to share in celebrating our community's success!"

Sports Physicals for Students
For the past 4-years in May, MHS has provided sports physicals for many local students. This year, Dr. Wright, Dr. Foster, Dr. Finkbeiner, Dr.
Brummeler, and Andria Keusch, PA-C, along with support staff volunteers: Bev Brecker, LPN, Carla Wheeler RRT, Ronda Reyburn, MA, Linda Jones RMA, Tina Brecker, Sherri Stirn, and Gail Bullard helped at Chippewa Hills School District (photo) with 291 physicals completed.
MHS also hosts the Big Rapids Sports Physical Clinic in the Linden Street MAB location. Several MHS providers and MCGH providers volunteer time. In addition Dr. Brummeler conducts a sports physical clinic for the Crossroads Charter Academy, and Dr. VanderHill conducts a sports physical clinic for St. Peter's Lutheran. Dr. Wright conducts a Special Olympics Sports Physical Clinic at MHS in the spring for students who attend the Transition Center in Big Rapids. All time is donated by providers, and the majority of the hours spent are in addition to their full day-work week.
The cost is $5 or $10 - determined by the school system. Sports physicals are a prerequisite for students to participate in any school sports activity. Those who attend the sports clinics are able to receive the physical for a nominal fee. Otherwise, most physician offices will charge the price of a full physical for the sports exam, generally about $100. The clinics are arranged in coordination with each school's sports department and or sports booster organization. Sport Physical clinics are one way we can give back to families in the community that supports us so much throughout the year.
