Mecosta County General Hospital — New ER/OR Renovation Project
Mecosta County General Hospital has come a long way from the early wooden hospital created in 1879 by Sister Mary Joseph Lynch, to the state-of-the-art model acute care community and regional health facility it has become today.

In March 2004, the current Emergency Room, Surgical Suites, and Patient Registration and Laboratory areas began to transform into an efficiency-improved area, thanks to the voter-approval of an $11 million county-wide millage. Phase II, which includes the construction of the new 29,000 square foot portion of the project will be completed in May 2005.

MCGH's current ER facilities were designed in the early seventies to accommodate 8,000 - 10,000 visits per year and are no longer adequate to meet consumer needs for privacy, confidentiality comfort and convenience with an average annual ER census of 23,000 and 200 to 300 outpatient visits each day.

Recognition of the need for improvement among consumers and Mecosta County voters has been strong and gratifying, with the vote in favor of the supporting bond issue at 2 to 1 in a special election held in April, 2003.

Fencing of the "infield" portion of the MCGH campus has begun, extending North--South from Locust Street to the south edge of the main building, and East--West from the edge of the current ER parking area to the east wall of the current hospital building.

MCGH Chief Clinical Officer Netty Cove oversees the project, and she says, "Outpatients, inpatients and visitors are advised to use only the parking lot off Oak Street on the south side of the hospital campus. New signs in the parking lot will direct people to a new temporary entrance at the South end of the building. Entry doorways are being enlarged and there will be additional volunteers to guide patients, especially for the first few days after initial changes are made. The same registration facilities will continue in use, and there will be an improved registration process to minimize the impact of these changes. Once the project is completed, the main entrance to the hospital will be re-established facing south toward Oak Street, and the emergency entrance will be permanently located on Locust Street for greater

accessibility, safety and convenience."

Netty says:

"We are excited about the new project and will do our best to ensure that everyone's needs are accommodated while we work to improve our current facilities."
The current parking changes are expected to be in effect until February 2005.

A flyer with map and parking information will be distributed to current patients and medical staff offices, and will be available in the Outpatient Registration area.

The hospital staff welcomes comments, questions and suggestions related to the project or to MCGH in general at (231) 592-4409.

A view of what the new addition will look like-complete May 2005.
